There are huge disparities between adults in terms of literacy and the benefits that come with it. Those benefits are often discussed in terms of social and financial success later in life, but there are other benefits to literacy that we perhaps think less on, such as the respite that reading a good book can bring. Mindful reading is an opportunity for the reader to gain relief and distance from the immediate busyness of one’s life (Driscoll, 2024). And even though the discourse of mindful reading can emphasize reading as an internal and therefore solitary experience, it can perhaps be best achieved through social activities such as Shared Reading, especially for people who may find reading (or life) challenging. In this presentation, I will introduce the Shared Reading intervention and discuss the results from a pilot study with a Shared Reading group in Liverpool. I will focus on the experience of absorption during their Shared Reading sessions, which I will argue is the reason why Shared Reading can be seen as a mindfulness practice that can have profound effects on mental well-being.
